This treatment is ideal for you if you have chronic and recurring pain, you feel out of line or unbalanced from your sport, your job or just life’s repetitive activities such as sitting at the PC, or a physical profession. It can be particularly effective after pregnancy and knee/hip surgeries to ease out postural compensations.
It’s the most topical of subjects isn’t it, we grow up with the constant reminder from our parents of stand up, put your shoulders back, stop slouching…but is it just a case of forcing our bodies into a perceived correct shape. Or will it be a constant battle?
Our bodies are shaped by our life and our posture very much reflects its story. Many things from genetics, accidents, sports, experiences, careers, surgery or even our mental state can affect how we stand and present ourselves to the world. Whether we’ve led a sedentary life, spent hours sitting down at the computer at work, played a sport competitively or even had a baby – our bodies will physically adapt to the repetitive positions we demand of it.
These adaptations, let’s call them compensations, create imbalances, (not only in our muscles), but through the whole connective tissue (fascia) of our body. So in the case of an office worker it’s easy to see that the front line of the body will be shortened and tight from the sitting position, whilst the back line will be lengthened and weakened. This results in potential low back pain, shoulder and neck tension along with stiffness through the knees and hips.
So what to do you might ask? Releasing and working with the fascia to rebalance the planes of the body is a great place to start via Myofascial Release hands on therapy, combined with yoga or movement. Countering our positions, e.g in the case of a sedentary office worker – lying backwards over a swiss ball at the end of a working day is a real winner.
To sum up, yes it’s a bit of a battle...as life is repetitive, but at least we have the tools to adjust it!
